Darcy Bacha Wins 2012 Photo of The Year | Powder Awards

Congratulations to Darcy Bacha for winning Powder Magazine's 2012 Photo of the Year. You have probably seen many of Darcy's shots from the Dakine Catalog shoot in Valle Nevado we hosted last August, but nothing comes close to this image of Sammy Carlson on Mount Hood.

Powder Magazine calls it "one of the most unique images that have ever graced the front page of The Skier’s Magazine."

The picture was captured by Darcy while filming Carlson's movie, On Top of The Hood.

Chapelco is located near the town of San Martin De Los Andes, Argentina. Perched above Lacar Lake in Lanin National Park places Chapelco in the gorgeous Lake District of Argentina. Chapelco's high speed quad, gondola and access into the steep backcountry bowls make for unforgettable days in the Southern Andes.

I had a blast on the 2011 Summer Ski Escape…the conditions were perfect with fresh pow nearly every day, and the terrain was fantastic. Most of all, I enjoyed cat-skiing at El-Arpa and ducking the lines at El Colorado to come down Santa Teresita.

What was the strangest thing you saw while in South America?

Aside from snow during “summer”? The Chilean drink “el terremoto” (translates to “the earthquake”): white wine with a scoop of pineapple sherbet finished with a shot of Fernet Branca. Eep.

We were hiking at Las Lenas for about an hour before we got to a ridge that had to be crossed to ski the other side. While hiking and on the ridge, the winds were gusting up to 60+ mph and Moe was at the front of the pack leading us when all of a sudden he turned around and directed us back the way we came, due the inability to cross the ridge safely. The look on his face was priceless! When Moe has that look on his face you know the shit is about to hit the fan….. Just one of many that bring a smile to my face! In general….the entire trip brings a smile. Powder Quest rocks!

Life is short & unpredictable. That is a fact that no one can change.

Last spring a tragic eruption shook the Puyehue Volcano in the South of Chile. The last time this volcano had erupted was 1960 and the surrounding area had barely recovered. Skiing & Snowboarding in Cerro Catedral in Bariloche Argentina on Weather Days

One of the things we like the best about skiing in bariloche is that even on low visibility days where there is a storm in the area, there is terrain to make some great turns.

The lower half of the Catedral Ski Resort offers some of the best tree skiing anywhere in the world. Natural features are covered with snow making it the ultimate freeride playground for skiers and snoboarders even in low visibility. Check out a short video from our friend and Bariloche local Chimango Martinez as he shows how much fun you can have on a "down day" skiing the trees in Argentina.

It is hard to describe the magical nature of the tree skiing at the Bariloche ski resort of Cerro Catedral Alta Patagonia until you experience it for yourself. Ancient trees covered with moss rise up all around you, while leaving perfectly spaced lines to ski and ride between. When there is wind it drives the snow into these lines redefining the term "deep powder". Bamboo grows in the lower part of the mountain, getting covered by snow and creating springy platforms to hop off everywhere you look.

In this installment of "Get to Know - PowderQuest" we tracked down PowderQuest guide Maxi Artoni and got him to answer some quick questions. Maxi has been skiing in Argentina and ski touring Patagonia for most of his life and brings a wealth of local knowledge to the PowderQuest crew. Always with a smile on his face and a positive attitude, Maxi helps clients get comfortable with pushing their limits in a very special way. We caught up with Maxi in Buenos Aires as he was preparing to head to Whistler, Canada where he spends the North America winter skiing and touring as much as possible.

1.) First up, how long have you been skiing South America?
I was lucky to born right next to a ski area (Chapelco Ski Resort, Argentina) so I have been skiing since I was 4

2.) What is your favorite place to ski in Argentina and why?

Las Lenas, because of the easy access to tons of awesome terrain.

3.)What is your favorite place to ski in Chile and why

Termas de Chillan in southern Chile, It has a big variety of landscape and line options. You can ski amazing trees down low and still access big alpine lines up top. There are so many places to go and explore.

4.)What do you like the most about guiding for PowderQuest

I like that I get to travel and ski in many places during the season. I also get to meet cool people from many different places and backgrounds and get to share time when everyones is having a good time. I love being able to show people around my country and letting them in on my favorite zones I grew up exploring and skiing.

5.) If you had to pick one male and one female pro skier to spend the day with who would it be and why

Thats not easy to answer, for the guy, I would say Glen Plake, I think It would be fun and he must have some amazing stories to tell. As for the girl, I say a day in Alaska with Kellie Okonek, she does some fun stuff.

6.)What made you want to become a guide?

I really like to spend most my time in the mountains, any time of the year, and being a guide Is a good way, I get to share my passion for what I do and try to give people an experience they wouldnt have on their own.

7.) What makes you smile?

A powder day with my friends, skiing powder is awesome alone but when you get to share the moment it is even better.

The culture and the people. There is a rich history in Chile and it shows! I always try to arrive a day before I need to head up to the mountains so I can explore the local culture and cities. Santiago was amazing!

Starting in the Central Hokkaido region you will ski some of the lightest powder in the world before going to Niseko, which averages around 15 meters of snow each season. You will also experience volcanoes, hot thermal springs and sushi on a trip that has all the makings of a truly memorable Japanese snow journey.

THE AREA
Central Hokkaido is known for exceptionally light powder snow due to cold temperatures and low humidity levels.

Niseko is in the west of Hokkaido and is renowned for huge accumulations of snow and for exceptional tree skiing.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Advanced level and can ski/snowboard deep powder.

TERRAIN AND SNOW
A combination of alpine and tree skiing, although we will often be skiing in the glades due to frequent storms. Expect to be skiing verticals of 500 to 900 meters. The Hokkaido snowpack is deep and generally very stable.

PROGRAM ITINERARY Ski Japan | Snowboard Japan

DAY 1 (Fri Jan 20)
Arrive Asahikawa and transfer to Furano. The town is known as the ‘Navel of Hokkaido’ for its central location on the island. The town has a good selection of bars and restaurants.

DAY 2 (Sat Jan 21)
Furano ski resort is one of the premier ski areas of Hokkaido and has steeper terrain than other areas of Hokkaido. Our off-piste circuit takes us out of the ski area boundaries which provides for 900 vertical meters of skiing each run. Easy access out of the resort makes for a big day of skiing.

DAY 3 (Sun Jan 22)
Today we travel to a ski area nearby. This is great tree skiing and riding in a wide open and expansive resort with some of Hokkaido's best side-country skiing.

DAY 4 (Mon Jan 23)
Asahidake is at 2,290m the highest mountain in Hokkaido and is also a live volcano. You will be awed by this conical shaped mountain that looms over the ski area with its multiple smoking fumaroles. On clear days you will see plumes of white smoke billowing from its many vents. A cable-car gives lift access to the tree line providing for 600 meters of skiing through primeval forests of spruce that are 600 years old.

DAY 5 (Tues Jan 24)
Today's destination is a local's resort situated north of Furano. On the way we pass the huge statue of the Buddhist deity 'Kanronsama' who is the Goddess of Wishes. The resort sits in a valley and is perfectly located to catch snow from the predominant Westerly wind direction which deposits great quantities of snow on the off-piste. Transfer to Niseko, the powder skiing capital of Japan. Niseko is fed by weather systems that originate from Siberia which pick up moisture from the Sea of Japan.

DAY 6 (Wed Jan 25)
Today we will exit the ski resort boundaries to sample some of Niseko’s famous powder. From the tops of the cone shaped mountains there are stunning views of the Sea of Japan. The widely spaced birch offer some world-class tree skiing. Our last run finishes at the front door of a local outdoor thermal hot spring called the pool of five colors.

DAY 7 (Thu Jan 26)
Today we venture to Rusutsu Resort. On a fine day it offers stunning panoramic views of Mt Yotei which is a huge extinct volcano that has been nicknamed the ‘Mt Fuji of the North.’ The off-piste terrain funnels skiers down drainages conveniently back to the lifts for quick laps. On the return journey we stop at an outdoor spring which overlooks Mt Yotei.

DAY 8 (Fri Jan 27)
Today we will ski a local resort in the Niseko area.

DAY 9 (Sat Jan 28)
On our last day in Niseko we will go to a small local resort in the center of the Niseko volcanic group of mountains. The area is well known for boiling volcanic ponds. We will enjoy the off-piste accessible from the lift before a short hike to the top of the peak for some turns down to another hot spring.

Day 10 (Sun Jan 29)
Transfer to Sapporo International Airport after breakfast.

Here is an update on the Puyehue Chile Volcano ash cloud and it's affect on the ski resorts in Chile and Argentina. Since the June 4th, 2011 eruption the ash cloud has circled the globe. Ash fell and continues to fall, depending on wind direction, on Patagonia Argentina, and parts of southern Chile.

THE FOLLOWING CHILE SKI RESORTS HAVE NOT BEEN AFFECTED WHAT SO EVER BY ASH FALL AND SHOULD OPERATE NORMALLY:

Valle Nevado scheduled to open after next snowfall
Portillo OPEN TO HOTEL GUESTS
El Arpa scheduled to open after next snowfall
La Parva scheduled to open after next snowfall

Ski Pucon on the Villarrica Volcano saw light ash fall yesterday due to a wind shift, but officials claim it will not affect operations and plan to open July 1st.

ARGENTINA MAJOR SKI RESORTS:

Las Lenas has not been affected by volcanic ash. Scheduled to open after next snowfall.

Cerro Bayo ski area has been severely affected as well as the town of Villa La Angostura.

Catedral (Alta Patagonia) in Bariloche too has been affected, but officials claim the ash has not harmed the ski lifts and plan on opening once they have enough snow. The town of Bariloche has been cleaning up from the ash, but the Patagonian winds and amount of ash in the surrounding area continue to make things difficult. The Bariloche airport remains closed. Improving News From Bariloche

According to a blog post today on First Tracks Online, despite Saturday's ash fall, Cerro Catedral officials plan on opening the Bariloche based ski resort for the 2011 season on June 17th.

In addition, Catedral has received over a foot of snow from the current system and the forecast is showing moderate snowfall continuing into Saturday.

While the airport remains closed due to the ash cloud stretching from the Andes to the Atlantic, Chilean officials are seeing a decrease in volcanic activity. Schools are opening again tomorrow. All of this is certainly improving news since last weekends eruption of Chile's Puyehue-Caulle volcano.

Volcano Cordon Caulle Puyehue Eruption in Southern Chile

On Saturday, a volcano in the Puyehue-Cordon Caulle chain of south-central Chile erupted after lying dormant for more than 50 years. The eruption happened near a border crossing, linking Osorno, Chile and Bariloche, Argentina. The winds have carried the volcanic ash Eastward towards the towns or San Martin de Los Andes, Villa La Angostura and Bariloche.

Schools in some cities and rural areas in neighboring Argentina were closed Monday, even as the volcanic ash fall appeared to have diminished, the state-run Telam news agency said. Parts of southern Chile remained on red alert.

Eastward wind gusts have left a layer of ashes up to 30 centimeters (12 inches) on an Argentinian highway. "We still don't know, because it depends on the wind how it will continue. ... The recommendation to the population is that they stay inside," said Eduardo Munos, municipal civil defense director in Junin de los Andes, Argentina.

With 54 cms (almost 2 feet) of recent snow, El Colorado Ski Resort in Chile officially launched the 2010 ski season today.

Partly cloudy skies and 5 lifts running including expert terrain Cono Este and Cornisa. Oh, and 30% off lift tickets through the weekend.

May 27, 2010: The storm clouds lifted overnight and we awoke to this beautiful view of Volcano Villarrica. Not a bad way to start the day. Itching to get up there!

Chile Earthquake Relief: Save The Waves and PowderQuest Team Up

Non profit Save The Waves Coalition and PowderQuest Tours have teamed up to get more aid to the Chilean coast after Chile's crushing earthquake and tsunami.
PowderQuest is pledging $100 for every spot sold on our Chile ski tours this season. The money will go directly to Save The Waves Chile Earthquake fund, helping to rebuild the Chilean coast rocked by the earthquake.
PowderQuest's initial donation following the Chile earthquake went to Save The Waves to get direct aid including fresh water, water filters, sleeping bags, tents, and blankets to those in need.
More help is needed and you can be a part of it. Help us rebuild the beautiful coast.

SKI PORTILLO IS UNHURT BY THE CHILEAN EARTHQUAKE
Hotels, Infrastructure, Ski Lifts and Roads are in good condition

Portillo, Chile (March, 2, 2010) .- Ski Portillo, located approximately 100 miles from Santiago, Chile’s capital city, escaped the recent earthquake with no injuries, and only superficial repairs. Tierra Atacama, sister hotel, located in San Pedro de Atacama, more than 1,000 miles north of the epicenter, is also undamaged.

According to Henry Purcell, owner of Ski Portillo, “We have some superficial cracks and some painting to do, but the roads to Portillo and all of the lifts made it through the earthquake without incident. We are very fortunate to have escaped without any injuries or damages, but we grieve for the people of Concepcion, which is far from Portillo and near the epicenter of the quake and I encourage anyone who wants to help to send their humanitarian support.”

“There should be no impact for travelers to Ski Portillo for the season, which runs from June 19 – Oct. 2, 2010. And for travelers to Tierra Atacama, which is open all year, there should be no problem once the Santiago airport is back to normal probably next week.”

To send aid, Ski Portillo recommends donating to one of two of Chile’s leading charities, or to the international organizations Habitat for Humanity/World Vision or Red Cross:

- Un Techo Para Chile (A Roof for Chile) – Similar to Habitat for Humanity, and will help those who lost their homes to rebuild anew. http://www.untechoparamipais.org/chile/

The PowderQuest team has received hundreds of emails and Facebook messages offering prayers and assistance after Saturday's huge earthquake and tsunami in central Chile. All of our staff and families are safe and the beautiful town of Pucon, our local base, saw little to no damage. Most ski areas are also reporting minimal to no damage. (See below). Your messages have been amazingly uplifting!

Unfortunately areas around the epicenter of the quake, especially on the coast, approximately 170 km south of the capital city, Santiago, have been devastated. Thousands are homeless and need immediate assistance, you can help!

La Parva, Chile Honors Shane McConkey

La Parva, one of Chile's finest ski resorts for off-piste and backcountry access, has honored freeskiing great Shane McConkey in creating a memorial off-piste run, "McConkey's".

Rodrigo Medina, head of La Parva's marketing, was a long time fan of Shane and his inspirational skiing. Saddened by McConkey's death, Medina and friends decided to name one of The Andes best off-piste runs in his honor.

Listed on La Parva's 2009 trail map, McConkey's is accessed via a boot pack hike off the top chair, Las Aguilas, above 3,574 meters.

PowderQuest guide Mo Rasiah and I spent 2 bluebird days checking out the conditions in beautiful Nevados de Chillan and Las Trancas, Chile. Conditions are early season, but were pretty good above 2000 meters where we spent most of our time riding the off-piste and back country off of Otto chairlift. There is snow coverage all the way to the base of the ski resort.
Yesterday we summited Volcano Chillan Nuevo, 3150 meters, had lunch in the crater by the warm rocks with an epic view East to Argentina. The 1,500 meter descent back to the base was a great way to start the year.

First Snows of the 2009 Andes Ski Season

Central Chile's ski resorts received 30-40 cm (up to 15 inches) of fresh snow on Sunday/Monday (as seen in the picture provided to us by Valle Nevado Resort) with more in the forecast.
Starting tonight, most of Chile and areas like Las Lenas, Argentina are expecting to receive up to 5 feet of snow by the time it tapers off on Saturday.
Some areas of Chile, including the rustic ski resort of Villarrica-Pucon, have already seen close to a meter of snow (3.5 feet) since Saturday.
Numerous ski areas, including Valle Nevado and Portillo plan on opening this Saturday...assuming they can clear the roads.

We were very sad to hear the news that legendary pro freeskier Shane McConkey died today in a base jumping accident in Italy.
Often seen skiing the biggest lines in Portillo, Chile and a smile on his face at Tio Bob's, Shane was an inspiration to the sport and will be missed. RIP Shane:

Patagonia Update: Volcano Chaiten's Effect

Since our last post on Volcano Chaiten (please read), activity dropped and flights into Bariloche returned to almost normal. However this weeks increase in volcanic activity has once again released ash high into the atmosphere causing flight delays and cancellations into Patagonia.

Lan Chile and Aerolineas Argentina are reducing their flights into Bariloche for later June and even into July, the start of the high season for skiing. If you have flight plans into Bariloche be sure to check with your airlines regarding changes or cancellations. Some flights will be redirected to the Argentine city of Neuquen or Puerto Montt, Chile.

2008 South America Ski Season Underway

Another 2 feet of snow has covered the Andean ski resorts of Portillo, La Parva, Valle Nevado and Las Lenas, allowing for an early start of the 2008 ski season. El Colorado and La Parva are now open to the public and the remaining major resorts will be launching next weekend.

6 Feet of Snow Falls in Portillo, Chile

Two large back-to-back, late fall snowstorms slammed into the Andes of Chile and Argentina over the past 10 days, bringing flooding rains, saving Chile from 2007/2008 drought conditions, and blessed ski resorts like Portillo with close to 6 feet of snow.

The recent snow will allow Portillo and other resorts to open earlier than scheduled. Portillo will now open their 2008 ski season on June 14th. El Colorado, La Parva, and Valle Nevado, may even open next week as another snow storm is in the forecast starting Sunday night.

Volcano Chaiten Erupts

After a 9,000 year rest, early May's eruption of Volcano Chaiten in Chile has all eyes on Patagonia.

The big question for PowderQuest is how will this affect the South American ski season starting in mid June. Unfortunately, for now, it is an impossible question to answer. No one knows for sure what will happen. It could spew ash for months, or it could return to a dormant state tomorrow.

It is important to note that Volcano Chaiten is located 110 kms from Esquel and 230 kms from Bariloche, the hub for many of our tour. There is no risk of lava touching these towns, and currently the only effect on these two towns is falling ash due to the prevailing east winds. It has been very minimal to date in Bariloche, while Esquel has recently been hit with several inches of ash in town. They are currently cleaning up the ash in Esquel from the streets.

The government of Argentina is calling this ash "non-toxic", but regardless if it is or not, it is not exactly something you really want to be breathing.

PowderQuest is keeping a close eye on the situation, but currently are not canceling our ski and snowboard tours in Patagonia. We are still 45-90 days away from most trips, and currently the only possible change we see would be to replace our planned days skiing La Hoya Ski Resort in Esquel, with Chapelco ski resort in San Martin de Los Andes, located 3 hours north of Bariloche.
This would only affect our Patagonia Powder Tour.

However we will be watching closely as flights to Bariloche, San Martin, Esquel, and other small local airports in Patagonia have recently been canceled on and off, due to fears that ash at 25,000 feet could damage airplane engines.

As we continue to monitor the situation in Patagonia we will make updates here. Other trips potentially affected if the situation worsens are:

Hut to Hut

Life Of A Ski Guide & Pro Skier - Catching Up With Les Manley

Les Manley, can be hard to track down. As a ski guide for PowderQuest Tours and a professional skier, Les is constantly chasing the best snow around the globe for a living.

We recently had a chance to catch up with Les en route to Slovenia to compete in the Quicksilver Freeride Battle going down over the weekend.

PowderQuest: Les, quite the season you are having with all the snow falling in Canada. What have you been up to?

Les Manley: My Season has been and is quite the wirl wind, maybe a bit more than usual. I started things off in Whistler, BC in December guiding clients for Extremely Canadian. We had a ton of snow and I was very happy to be sharing the steep and deep of my home mountain with folks for the third season in a row. I also did a fair amount of backcountry ski guiding. In early February I took of for Verbier, Switzerland to get a shot at skiing powder in the Alps.

PowderQuest: Yeah, skiing British Columbia has been good! Why sacrifice the powder in BC for a trip to the Alps?

Les Manley: Basing myself out of Verbier I have been ski guiding quite a bit and making day trips to small ski resorts in the area such as Orvnaz, Super St. Bernard, and Bruson. In Late February I travelled to Bansko, Bulgaria to compete in the Red Bull Powder Kick freesking contest where I was able to take third place.

PowderQuest: Congratulations! Good thing I was not there, I would have taken you out! What will you be doing until your come back and guide for PowderQuest starting in June?

Les Manley: I plan on staying in the Alps till May and have a number of ski tours to peaks over 4000m planned before then. I will be touring in B.C. in the late spring, taking some clients on the Spearhead traverse and completing some rock climbing courses. In June it's back to South America!

PowderQuest: Yeah we can't wait to get back in the snow in the Andes. I know you love Argentina, What is your favorite places to ski?

Les Manley: My favorite backcountry line in South America is Adrenalina in the Las Lenas valley which I had the pleasure of heliskiing two seasons ago. My favorite in bounds terrain is the Laguna area at Cerro Catedral, Bariloche.

PowderQuest: Good spots! So what would be your favorite PowderQuest guided ski tour?

Les Manley: If I could pick any PQ trip it would be the Frontier-Las Lenas because I truly love skiing in the high Andes; you can't beat the thigh burning descents, light snow, and gaucho culture.

PowderQuest: Yeah, plus the cat skiing in El Arpa on that trip is a must do experience in Chile.

With all the travel and job opportunities you get, why do you keep coming back for our small ski operation?

Les Manley: I think the best thing about working for PowderQuest is being able to share unique mountain experiences with PQ guests in the vibrant culture of South America. The travel isn't bad either!

PowderQuest: We get a lot of questions from our guests on what skis to bring down or buy. I understand you are on a new ski this year. Tell us about it.

Les Manley: I have recently signed with Movement Skis and am really enjoying the powerful ride their fat ski, the Goliath provides.

PowderQuest: I know that Mo Rasiah enjoyed guiding on the Movement Goliath last year and a lot of the other guides are requesting we get this ski as the official ski for PowderQuest guides. Movement supported our operations last year and we look forward to working with them again. We may even have a demo line up for our tour guests to try out.

2007 season about to start with deep snows!

Rumors of El Nino (lots of snow), switched to La Nina (dry), then back again. Basically I am not sure if any forecaster in South America really gets it right. But here is the latest as of June 10th. All ski resorts from Termas de Chillan, south have been getting absolutely hammered the past week with a cold, low pressure system that has resulted in over 1 meter of new snow in several areas! While Portillo, Las Lenas, and Valle Nevado remain dry, this storm is scheduled to push into these areas on Tuesday. Perfect timing as the 2007 South America ski season starts next weekend.

Cat Skiing in Chile

Ahhh, Cat skiing Chile style. Dirt road access, snow, big mountains, and 2 meter cactus surround us as we wind our way up the hidden valley 2 hours north of Santiago.
We guided our first trip in El Arpa Cat Skiing this season, and I personally got up there this weekend, October 10th for some incredible spring skiing.
Ski Arpa Cat Skiing operations are rustic, but get you to some beautiful terrain and epic skiing. I have not seen a lot of backcountry areas that can easily manage low level intermediates to experts looking to shread steep lines all day, however Ski Arpa's got it!Just spending the day with an idol like Tony Sponar, El Arpa's owner and creator is worth the trip.A recent article on Powder Magazine says:25 years ago, Sponar bought 5000 acres in the mountains outside Los Andes, Chile and for most of that time he’s had it to himself. He would drive the rugged road up to his land, and with a few friends or clients, would tour around the ridges, Aconcagua—the tallest peak in the Americas—looming overhead. His dream has always been to operate a ski area up here. But dreams like that cost money, and just getting up the road from town can be an adventure. PowderQuest will be developing more programs there next year, in hopes that Tony Sponar's dream, 25 years in the making, stays alive.

August Chill

Mother Nature could not have timed it better. As the last of the hundreds of 50-foot tour buses full of sundreanched Brazilians rolled out of the Andes and into the smog of Santiago, saying "Ate logo" to Winter break, the first flakes in weeks started to fill the Andean sky!
After a long (Too long) 2 week high pressure system blocked out any chance of snow during the holidays in the Andes, a welcome storm is in full force as I write this blog. The winds force is awesome here, sometimes reaching Hurricane strength, plastering everything in site with fresh snow. It can be brutal when you are out there, but when it's over, it is generally one of those days you don't forget.
The main pass from Chile to Argentina is closed, and with the exception of the unlucky truck drivers stuck in what could turn out to be a 4-day dig out, those lucky enough to be "Stranded" in Portillo today are in for a big one once this white hurricane blows out and the massive Andean sky breaks bluebird.
I have spoken to our guides and friends today from Valle Nevado, Chile to 1000 clicks south in Bariloche, Argentina, and they all have that same stoke in their voice.
"It's blowing the roof off and it's puking!" Tomas yelled as he was on the Andes Express chair in Valle Nevado trying to shout over the storms force.
"After two weeks of Brazilian eye candy, I gotta go ride some August pow and cool off."

July 2005 is nearing it's end, and it has been one to remember. PowderQuest Ski South America ran several tours with some of the best conditions we have seen since our start back in the late 90's!
The Cimarra Sur guests arrived to the top of the 10,000 foot smoking Volcano Villarrica in excellent powder conditions and blue bird skies.
PowderQuest successfully helped produce Nike ACG's latest advertising campaign in the backcountry of Valle Nevado, and professional partiers Brad Gowenlock, Kevin Gordon, Adam Gowans, Robert Graham, and Glenn Crump joined us for a trip to Chillan where they claim they had the best riding days of their lives, not to mention some interesting nights out on the town! I think they caused the black out in Santiago.
Today, July 27th, I am here in my in-home office watching the winter skies open once again in Pucon, the woodstove is going as well as the tunes, and a good cup of South American coffee has me charged. I am stoked, as this weekend it is back on the road for the sold out Cimarra Norte trip, starting Saturday in Valle Nevado.

25 Feet of Snow and more on the way

Am I dreaming? A 25 foot high White Wall is calling my name, and skiers from all over the globe for that matter.
I am getting out of the office in 3 days for the rest of the season, and over 7 meters of snow is out there waiting for me to shred! 3 of those have fallen just this week. Have you checked the snow reports?!
PowderQuest guests that are on our late June and July trips are in for some of the best skiing of their lives! The news is circulating about the latest storms in the Andes, and our phone won't stop ringing. People are booking the last spots remaining in July, asking if they can get a job with us, and curious to see if the forecasts are real.
Yes! So real. Terrain features are showing up that I have never seen before,and the snow is so deep in spots, you can get face shots simply by thinking about it.

Ski Chile and Argentina: 2005 Season

I have to say that after 7 years of skiing the Andes, this is the best start I have seen. I have never been so stoked to start the season, and for people who know me, that is saying a lot.
I feel like a blissed out kid who just heard on the radio that school is closed due to snow!
Portillo, Las Lenas, Valle Nevado and all the way down into mystical Patagonia has received not feet, but meters of fresh snow this month. There is so much snow on the Volcano Villarrica you can't even get to the lift in a vehicle, you have to hike in! It is 8 degrees F in Bariloche and the season has been going since late May.
The season is on, and in a few days we guide our first trip on what may be the season I have always dreamed about. Let it snow Hueon!!
